MISE EN SCENE

"Mise en scène" is a French term that translates to "putting in the scene". It refers to everything that's going to be in the shot from props to people. Proper use of mise en scene elevates the film from a series of moving to picture to an art form with purpose. It has five main elements;

  1. Setting and Props
  2. Costume, Hair and Make-up etc
  3. Facial Expressions and Body Language
  4. Lighting and Colours
  5. Positioning of Characters

Every element in the frame plays a really important part in the portrayal of the story and contribute in establishment of the theme. They collectively tell a visual story by conveying different feelings, emotions and messages. Sometimes the directors add hidden meanings that aren't incorporated into the story which the usual audience would ignore but it allows the observers to dive deeper into the scene.
